Holiday highlights

The cultural and historical impact of Florence is overwhelming. Close up, however, the city is one of Italy's most atmospheric and pleasant, retaining a strong resemblance to the small late-medieval centre that contributed so much to the cultural and political development of Europe. Its striking buildings, formidable galleries and treasure-crammed churches attest to the Florentine love of display.

The beautiful Renaissance town of Lucca lies a short distance from Montecatini, and a regular train service links the two. Lucca’s remarkably intact city walls provide an ideal set of viewpoints from which to see the town’s rooftops, bell towers and lush surrounding countryside. If visiting Lucca in your free time, try to include the Cathedral of San Martino, to see Tintoretto’s painting of The Last Supper and a wooden cross carved by Nicodemus.

Practical Information for this holiday

Trip Itinerary - Day by day

Day 1 - Travel to Bologna

Travel to Bologna

Upon arrival in Bologna Airport, you will be met by your Tour Manager who is a fellow photographer and they will guide you throughout the duration of your tour. You will transfer by private coach to your hotel in Lucca. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the first night of this fabulous trip. You will enjoy a welcome dinner with your group on this evening at a local restaurant.

Day 2 - Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will have a full day excursion in the Cinque Terre region. The famous Cinque Terre is a little corner of Italian Riviera where generations have worked to create this monument in landscape architecture represented by the steep terraces sloping down to the sea. It is a landscape unique in the world in which man and nature live together in harmony since the beginning of time. You will visit by local train, the villages suspended between sea and earth, clinging on to cliffs and surrounded by green hills. This is a truly amazing experience and a perfect destination that will offer you an array of photographic opportunities.

Lucca photoshoot

You will return to Lucca late in the afternoon and enjoy dinner at leisure. Following dinner, you will head out into the picturesque city of Lucca for a night time photography location shoot. The city is crammed with beautiful Romanesque churches - an architecture enthusiast’s dream.

Day 3 - Florence

Area Naturale del Monteferrato

On this morning, you will travel to Florence with a visit to the Area Naturale del Monteferrato en route. This national park lies within the undulating mountain system delimiting the Florence-Prato-Pistoia plain to the north. The area was named after the mountain complex of Monteferrato, a pre-apennine spur formed by three peaks (Piccioli, Mezzano, and Chiesino or Poggio Ferrato) reaching a maximum height of 420m above sea level and characterized by peculiar geological features given by the abundance of ophiolitic rocks, which led to the formation of a unique biotope, completely different from the surrounding natural environments from an ecological point of view.

Florence markets

Continue to Florence visit two or three main Florence markets: the St. Lorenzo’s Market, the Central Market and St. Ambrogio’s Market. In these markets, all kind of food and goods are sold: vegetables, flowers, meat, fresh fruit, leather goods, spices etc. There will be some free time for lunch. Why not try a Florentine steak or head to the Uffizi Gallery, which holds some of the most impressive Renaissance art in the world. (Please note that the Uffizi Gallery should be booked in advance. See www.uffizi.com for details). You will the go to the Piazzale Michelangelo which has a panoramic view over the city. On the way back to your hotel in Lucca, there will be a stop at a vineyard for a sunset photoshoot. Enjoy dinner at leisure on this evening.

Day 4 - Return to Dublin

Full day

Return to Dublin

After breakfast there will be some free time in Lucca. Lucca is the birthplace of Puccini, and the only town in Italy entirely surrounded by walls. Considered to be among the wealthiest and most conservative cities in Tuscany, Lucca’s prosperity was gained largely through silk and high-quality olive oil. Transfer to Bologna Airport for your flight departure
