Activity Level Guide

We've created an activity level guide for all of our itineraries, so you can easily decide which holiday will suit you best.

Before you book your TD active holiday, we want you to make the right choice and ensure that the holiday suits your fitness and abilities. If you have any queries regarding our holiday activity levels, please call us on 01 637 1633.

Level 1 – Easy

This is an easy paced itinerary combining excursions at a relaxed pace with plenty of leisure/free time. Where excursions are included they may include climbing steps/stairs, walking over primarily level ground interspersed with periods of standing.

Level 2 – Leisurely

This is a leisurely paced itinerary and is full of cultural and interesting sightseeing and some free days to relax. Some excursion days may include reasonably early starts, some longer coach travel and possibly walking over uneven terrain. Guests should have reasonable health and mobility.

Level 3 - Moderate

This is a moderately paced itinerary that involves some longer days and more activities.  Expect some early hotel departures, and limited time for day time rest and rejuvenation as the itineraries are designed to ensure that you see as much as possible in these wonderful destinations. This may include longer coach journeys and guests should be able to join a walking tour lasting 2 - 4 hours with stops possibly over uneven terrain. Guests should have reasonable health and mobility and be comfortable with standing for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Level 4 – Busy

This is a consistently robust itinerary that is likely to be filled with a combination of long, active days, several early hotel departures and some long journeys by coach. There may be limited time for rest and rejuvenation as you explore these amazing destinations. There may be multiple flights and travel by non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, rickshaws/pedicabs, etc. Guests should have reasonable health and mobility and be capable of walking three or more km at a time over potentially difficult terrain which may include hills. Guests should be comfortable with standings for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Level 5 – Active

This is an active itinerary packed with a combination of long, active days, several early hotel departures and long journeys by coach. The itinerary may also involve multiple flights and travel by non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, rickshaws/pedicabs, bicycles etc. Some accommodation may be based on authentic home stays, overnight camping and/or some basic rural hotels adding to the authenticity of the experience. Alternatively, it could include concentrated periods of more strenuous physical activity e.g. Yoga. Guests should be capable of walking 5 to 10 km at a time over potentially difficult, uneven terrain which may include hills. Guests should have the appropriate levels of ability, fitness and good health to safely enjoy the holiday.

Level 6 – Challenging

This is a challenging itinerary packed full of exciting excursions and includes a combination of long, active days, several early hotel departures and longer journeys by coach. The itinerary may also involve multiple flights and travel by non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, rickshaws/pedicabs, bicycles etc. Some accommodation will be based on authentic home stays, overnight camping and some basic rural hotels adding to the authenticity of the experience. Guests should be capable of walking more than 10 km at a time over uneven, difficult terrain which will include hills. Guests should have tried these distances at least once before the trip, have a good level of fitness, be in good health and be physically active on a regular basis (6-10 hours per week) to safely enjoy this tour.

Level 7 – Tough

This is a tough itinerary suitable for those looking for that big adventure that packs loads in. There will be a combination of long, active days, several early hotel departures and long journeys by coach. The itinerary may also involve multiple flights and travel by non-traditional means such as safari vehicles, rickshaws/pedicabs, bicycles etc. Some accommodation will be based on authentic home stays, overnight camping and some basic rural hotels which all adds to the adventure. Guests should be capable of walking more than 15km at a time over uneven, difficult terrain which will include hills. Guests should have tried these distances at least once before the trip, be in excellent physical condition and be very active on a regular basis (minimum10 hours per week) to safely enjoy this tour.

At this level we recommend previous trekking experience, preferably at altitude. You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. Extremes of altitude and weather may be encountered.
